THE PROMISED LAND

THE PROMISED LAND

On a rattlesnake speedway in the Utah desert
I pick up my money and head back into town
Driving cross the Waynesboro county line
I got the radio on but I'm just killing time
Working all day in my daddy's garage
Driving all night chasing some mirage
Pretty soon little girl I'm gonna take charge

The dogs on Main Street howl 'cause they understand
If I could take this moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land

I've done my best to live the right way
I get up every morning and go to work each day
But your eyes go blind and your blood runs cold
Sometimes I feel so weak I just want to explode
Explode and tear this whole town apart
Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart
Find somebody itching for something to start

The dogs on Main Street howl 'cause they understand
If I could reach this moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land

Well there's a dark cloud rising from the desert floor
I packed my bags and I'm heading
Straight into the storm
Gonna be a twister to blow everything down
That ain't got the faith to stand its ground
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted

The dogs on Main Street howl 'cause they understand
If I could take this moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land
And I believe in a promised land
And I believe in a promised land

¡No!

¡No!

¡No! ¡Soy un hombre!
Y creo en una tierra prometida
Y creo en una tierra prometida
Y creo en una tierra prometida

STREETS OF FIRE

STREETS OF FIRE

When the night's quiet
And you don't care anymore
And your eyes are tired
And there's someone at your door
And you realize
You wanna let go
And the weak lies
And the cold walls you embrace
Eat at your insides
And baby I ain't no liar
I walk

Streets of fire
Streets of fire
Streets of fire

I'm wandering
A loser down the track
I'm dying
But baby I can't go back
'Cause in the darkness
I hear somebody call my name

And when you realize
How they tricked you this time
And it's all lies
But I'm strung out on the wire
In these

Streets of fire
Streets of fire
Streets of fire

I live now only with strangers
I talk to only strangers
I walk with angels
That have no place

And don't look in my face, don't
I'm coming home to this place
'Cause I'm stranded on the wire
Across

Streets of fire
Streets of fire
Streets of fire
Streets of fire

Devoran tus tripas
Y, cariño, no te miento
Cruzo

Calles de fuego
Calles de fuego
Calles de fuego

Voy deambulando
Un fracasado por el camino
Voy agonizando
Pero no puedo regresar
Porque en la oscuridad
Oigo a alguien gritar mi nombre

Y cuando comprendes
Cómo te engañaron esta vez
Y todas sus mentiras
Pero estoy colgando del alambre
En estas

Calles de fuego
Calles de fuego
Calles de fuego

Ahora sólo vivo con extraños
Sólo hablo con extraños
Camino con ángeles
Que no tienen hogar

Y no escudriñes mi rostro, no
Estoy regresando a mi hogar
Porque estoy atrapado en el alambre
Que cruza

Calles de fuego
Calles de fuego
Calles de fuego
Calles de fuego

PROVE IT ALL NIGHT

PROVE IT ALL NIGHT

I've been working real hard
Trying to get my hands clean
Tonight we'll drive that dusty road
From Monroe to Angeline
To buy you a gold ring and pretty dress of blue
Baby just one kiss will get these things for you
A kiss to seal our fate tonight
A kiss to prove it all night

Prove it all night
Girl there's nothing else that we can do
So prove it all night
Prove it all night
And girl I'll prove it all night for you

Everybody's got a hunger
A hunger they can't resist
There's so much that you want
You deserve much more than this
But if dreams came true
Oh, wouldn't that be nice
But this ain't no dream, we're living through tonight
Girl, you want it, you take it, you pay the price

Prove it all night
Prove it all night
Prove it all night girl and call the bluff
Prove it all night
Prove it all night
And girl I prove it all night for your love

Baby, tie your hair back in a long white bow
Meet me in the fields out behind the dynamo
You hear the voices telling you not to go
They made their choices and they'll never know
What it means to steal, to cheat, to lie
What it's like to live and die

Prove it all night
Prove it all night
Girl there's nothing else that we can do
Prove it all night
Prove it all night
And girl I'll prove it all night for you

DEMUÉSTRALO TODA LA NOCHE

He estado trabajando muy duro

Oh, ¿no sería maravilloso?

FACTORY

* I grew up in this town of about 10 000 people. And to see my father twice during the day, I used to come in at night, and... he'd be sitting in the dark in the kitchen table. I just see the light of cigarette, but sometimes he call me to come back and sit down with him, sometimes I just go up to bed. Then, in the morning I hear him... my bedroom was right over the backyard, and... I hear him getting up at 6 a.m. he go out to the backyard. He used to buy these 100 dollar junkers, these cars, and he'd be popping the hood 6 a.m. laying on the cold ground trying to get it started. And him, and his father worked in this factory, plastics factory in town, and... I ain't. And... this is a song I wrote for him. (04-08-1978, Charleston, VW)

FACTORY

Early in the morning
Factory whistle blows
Man rises from bed
And puts on his clothes
Man takes his lunch
Walks out in the morning light

It's the working
The working
Just the working life

Through the mansions of fear
Through the mansions of pain
I see my daddy walking
Through them factory gates in the rain
Factory takes his hearing
Factory gives him life

The working
The working
Just the working life

End of the day
Factory whistle cries
Men walk through these gates
With death in their eyes
And you just better believe, boy
Somebody gonna get hurt tonight

It's the working
The working
Just the working life

Veo a mi padre atravesar

DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN

* Thank you.... this is for my friend Dominic who´s at home listening or, I guess, I wish he was at home listening....and I just wanna let you know that we´re all with you and at one time or another everybody´s got to drive through the darkness on the edge of town..... and I know you´re gonna make it....
(19-09-1978, Passaic, NJ)

DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN

They're still racing out at the Trestles
But that blood it never burned in her veins
Now I hear she's got a house up in Fairview
And a style she's trying to maintain
Well if she wants to see me
You can tell her that I'm easily found
Tell her there's a spot out 'neath Abram's Bridge
And tell her there's a darkness on the edge of town
There’s a darkness on the edge of town

Everybody's got a secret, sonny
Something that they just can't face
Some folks spend their whole lives trying to keep it
They carry it with them every step that they take
Till some day they just cut it loose
Cut it loose or let it drag 'em down
Where no one asks any questions
Or looks too long in your face
In the darkness on the edge of town
In the darkness on the edge of town

Some folks are born into a good life
Other folks get it anyway anyhow
I lost my money and I lost my wife
Them things don't seem to matter much to me now
Tonight I'll be on that hill '
Cause I can't stop
I'll be on that hill with everything I got
Lives on the line
Where dreams are found and lost
I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost
For wanting things that can only be found
In the darkness on the edge of town
In the darkness on the edge of town

* Gracias…

Yo perdí mi dinero y perdí a mi mujer

BADLANDS

BADLANDS

Lights out tonight
Trouble in the heartland
Got a head-on collision
Smashin' in my guts, man
I'm caught in a cross fire
That I don't understand
But there's one thing I know for sure girl
I don't give a damn
For the same old played out scenes
I don't give a damn
For just the in betweens
Honey, I want the heart
I want the soul
I want control right now
You better listen to me baby
Talk about a dream
Try to make it real
You wake up in the night
With a fear so real
Spend your life waiting for a moment
That just don't come
Well, don't waste your time waiting

Badlands, you gotta live it everyday
Let the broken hearts stand
As the price you've gotta pay
We'll keep pushin' till it's understood
And these badlands start treating us good

Workin' in the fields
Till you get your back burned
Workin' 'neath the wheel
Till you get your facts learned
Baby I got my facts
Learned real good right now
You better get it straight darling
Poor man wanna be rich,
Rich man wanna be king
And a king ain't satisfied
Till he rules everything
I wanna go out tonight
I wanna find out what I got
I believe in the love that you gave me
I believe in the faith that could save me
I believe in the hope
And I pray that some day
It may raise me above these

Badlands, you gotta live it everyday
Let the broken hearts stand
As the price you've gotta pay
We'll keep pushin' till it's understood
And these badlands start treating us good

For the ones who had a notion
A notion deep inside
That it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive
I wanna find one face
That ain't looking through me
I wanna find one place
I wanna spit in the face of these

Badlands, you gotta live it everyday
Let the broken hearts stand
As the price you've gotta pay
We'll keep pushin' till it's understood
And these badlands start treating us good

MALAS TIERRAS

Persigo control ahora mismo
Será mejor que me escuches
Hablas sobre un sueño
Que intentas realizar
Te despiertas en la noche
Con un miedo muy real
Desperdicias la vida esperando un momento
Que nunca llega
No malgastes tu tiempo esperando

ADAM RAISED A CAIN

* Thank you. The "Darkness" songs are songs that I always return to. They're still some of my favorite to play. But "Adam Raised A Cain", that was religion, family, and somebody said that all rock angst boils down to daddy. And of course you know that, a certain amount, that is true. But I was talking to Bob Coles backstage and he said "man, those are early songs," and I said "yeah, I hope I'm not boring you in 'you're born in this life paying for the sins of somebody else's past', and I didn't spend a dime on analysis at that point." I wouldn't be as dumb as I look. But those are songs that I always go back to, they always hold something for me. And I carry on with this, with this religion, fathers and sons, family... Once you start mixing all those things together you are gonna deliver it, receive, and ask…(19-02-2003, Somerville, MA)

ADAM RAISED A CAIN

In the summer that I was baptized
My father held me to his side
As they put me to the water
He said how on that day I cried

We were prisoners of love
A love in chains
He was standin' in the door
I was standin' in the rain
With the same hot blood
Burning in our veins

Adam raised a Cain

All of the old faces
Ask you why you're back
They fit you with position
And the keys to your daddy's Cadillac

In the darkness of your room
Your mother calls you by your true name
You remember the faces, the places, the names
You know it's never over
It’s relentless as the rain

Adam raised a Cain

In the Bible Cain slew Abel
And East of Eden he was cast
You're born into this life paying
For the sins of somebody else's past

Daddy worked his whole life
For nothing but the pain
Now he walks these empty rooms
Looking for something to blame
You inherit the sins
You inherit the flames

Adam raised a Cain

Lost but not forgotten
From the dark heart of a dream

Adam raised a Cain

* Gracias.
